I am Caoimhe, 29 years old from Belfast, Ireland. I work as an outdoor educator in Wales with young people. I have a real passion for the outdoors and using it to get young people to realise their potential and grow. I have been working with young people in the outdoors for almost 10 years. Part of this has led to me taking on this solo expedition around Ireland.
I feel as a girl in the outdoors I am not as confident as my male friends and colleagues. I understand I need to stretch myself and stop relying on others to get my adrenaline kicks. I am in many ways terrified about May/June 2017 when I plan to start my trip around Ireland. I would like to do the trip in 40 days with as little support as possible. Nevertheless, due to the nature of the coastline and weather I know this will be difficult and demanding physically and mentally. In other ways, I am extremely excited about the trip as it is my opportunity to build my resilience and realise my own potential. I hope my trip will inspire people who have been like me in the past – thinking I cant do that… I’m not good enough… I haven’t the time or I couldn’t possibly do it alone… to think actually, there is average Caoimhe from working class West Belfast giving her adventure a bash, maybe I can find my adventure?!?
I am completely realistic in that I know this wont be easy especially alone but that is part of my personal challenge being an extrovert who loves being around people. I am also aware that the majority of people I have researched completing the circumnavigation to be 10 times more experienced than myself. But what better way to build that experience, on the great and wild seas surrounding Ireland.
